What May Happen in the Year of Our Lord 1688, by Jimmy Jacobson
What May Occur in the Year of our Lord 1688
by Brother Rigonaldo
Translated from the original latin by Jimmy Jacobson
Translator's Note
The following work of fiction was found on scrolls in a previously undiscovered, sealed room in an Italian monastery, in Italy. Along with the manuscript were found various drawings of the heavens, and what appear to be sketches of the sun including dark marks that could be sunspots. Both the sketches and scrolls have been carbon dated back to the 12th century A.D.
This remarkable story written by Brother Rigonaldo is set not in his own time and deals not with things that a 12th century monk should be familiar with. Instead it takes place centuries later in the year 1688 A.D. This not only is the first known example of the literary genre known as Science Fiction, but also proves that as long as civilization has existed, there have been men that dream of the future. And that also can't seem to get a girl.
Brother Rigonaldo extrapolates from the society and technology he knows to advances in science, math, philosophy, zoology and war. Unfortunately his work was not viewed approvingly by the head of his monastery and there is evidence he was burned alive for the crime of heresy.
